Roof Waterproofing Membranes
One of the main problems facing roofing is leaks. The primary purpose of roofing is to have something to protect us from the elements, so if leaks are present, that means our roofs don’t do their jobs well. One way to eliminate these leaks is to have roof waterproofing membranes applied to your roof.
Leakage has been an unfortunate part of roofing. Since the materials our roofs use deteriorate over time, leaks are bound to show up after sustaining gradual damage. While we can do our best to patch these damages up using sealants, the best thing is to have professionals do it to ensure the quality of work.
That’s where waterproofing membranes come in. Composed of a thin layer of waterproof material and used to fill up the spaces where water might seep in, this material bolsters the durability of your roof even further.
This material is advantageous in countries like Singapore, where the roofing is expected to withstand heavy rainfalls. The other thing to worry about when it comes to Southeast Asian countries is that the heat is just as harsh as the rainfalls, so these weather changes can cause cracks to form and leaks to follow suit.
If you’re worried about the cracks and leaks that come with changing weather, then your best bet is to have waterproofing membranes installed.
01.
Easy to Install
As with any roofing material, there are also different types of waterproofing membranes in Singapore. One particular type, the bituminous coating membrane, is easy to install and requires minimal maintenance. Sometimes, time is of the essence, and long installations might get in the way of other things you must do. You don’t have to worry about those things with this material.
02.
Durable and Long Lasting
You’d be forgiven for thinking that a material this thin isn’t durable, but you’d be wrong in that assumption. These membranes are comprised of durable materials like asphalt and fibreglass, making them resistant to damage and deterioration despite their thinness.
03.
Insulating Capability
Due to the materials used, these membranes can also insulate your homes, albeit just a tiny percentage. But if you couple the membranes with roof insulation and other roofing essentials also capable of providing insulation like roof coating, you’ll enjoy the additional insulation these membranes provide.
Types of Roof Waterproofing Membranes
Sheet-Based Membrane
Sheet-based membrane, as its name suggests, is a sheet of waterproofing material that you can unroll and generally takes up the shape of the surface it covers. This ability to adapt to different surfaces is also why it is highly recommended to clean the area thoroughly before applying the material.
Furthermore, two types of membranes can be categorised under sheet-based membranes. While their application methods and other minor details about them differ, they both do a great job of waterproofing your roofs.
Here are the two types of sheet-based membranes:
Bituminous Coating Membrane
A bituminous coating membrane is essentially asphalt, so the materials that make up this type of membrane are different minerals and components you can usually find in asphalt. The best thing about this type of membrane is its high UV resistance and is durable because of its overall composition.
Torch-on Membrane
Torch-on membranes are applied by basically melting the material onto your roof. This application method ensures that the surface and the possible cracks on it are covered, ensuring that not even the tiniest bit of crack can go unnoticed. The material is still sheet-based, but the application method is where it sets itself apart from the bituminous coating.
Liquid Applied Membrane
A liquid-applied membrane is a material similar to roof coatings in that it can be applied similarly. The best thing about this type of membrane is that it ensures complete coverage of the surface area because it is liquid-based. Furthermore, it is pretty easy to apply and gets the job done. There is the caveat of waiting for an extended period for it to dry up, but once it does, it offers maximum protection to your roof.
